5 Minute Interview

Each month we interview a local personality, this month is Heather Emmett the owner of Flaithulach Music

Heather Emmett

Venue: High Street, Knaresborough

Introduction: I opened Flaithulach Music in 2011 as a small independent music shop specialising in music tuition, with the aim of growing a local music school in my hometown. Something which is now a reality. My plans are to expand this area. As an artist I have also worked as a composer and sound designer in various settings and would like to offer this here in the future. I teach instruments to all ages and do so with a true vocation and passion. Every day is different and every person brings something unique. There is a real magic in teaching young people and we just seem to hit it off! Likewise, I am rewarded by the older generation who pick up an instrument for the first time and find a whole new world in it. I feel privileged to work here and for the support I receive from my students and customers.

The best thing about being a local business is …
The people.

Did you know…
How to pronounce the name of the shop? ‘Fla-hoo-look’, with a silent T. Some people just call it the shop with the ‘F word.’ 🙂

My very favourite thing about my business is …
My students, their families and the fact that I’m surrounded by music every day … and my least favourite … The local authorities seem to prevent the town from achieving its full potential.

When I was young, I always wanted to be …
a music teacher, sax player, composer.

If I could choose to do any other job in the world today it would be …
I was very career driven and have worked in many areas of music and sound. Life has taught me what’s important and to value it. I wouldn’t want to leave to do anything else.

One piece of business advice I’d like to give is …
Hold onto the reason you fell in love with what you do.

My biggest inspiration is/was …
My parents, they loved music and gave me a chance at it. We shared so much and they travelled all over for screenings and concerts.

5 words that I would use to describe my business are …
Friendly, community-driven, experienced, fun and evolving.

5 words that others would use to describe me are …
Creative, sensitive, workaholic, analytical and inspiring.
